Finding himself cured, one of them turned back praising God at the top of his voice and threw himself at the feet of Jesus and thanked him. The man was a Samaritan. This made Jesus say, ‘Were not all ten made clean? The other nine, where are they? It seems that no one has come back to give praise to God, except this foreigner.’ And he said to the man, ‘Stand up and go on your way. Your faith has saved you.’ Luke 17:11-19
After years of looking for a job, you finally get one. What do you do on your first day of reporting for work?
From a business advisory perspective, we follow a three steps approach – ACT – Assess, Change and Transform. We recommend our clients to undertake an assessment of the current state of the business to know where it is now and where it should be given its context and perspective. No one can improve or make better anything they do not understand well. Assessment is akin to diagnosis. This is what separates a mediocre medical doctor from an exceptional one. Great doctors are fantastic at diagnosis. You cannot solve a problem you do not understand. You cannot treat a disease you do not understand. Best doctors understand their patients, disease histories, lifestyle, family health background, and symptoms, among others. When you have the right diagnosis, it is easy to give the right prescription.
When you receive an offer for a job, do not wait for the first day. Start reading about the company, who is who, the background, competition, and major revenue and cost drivers. It does not matter the level you are. Think like a leader, be long term. When you start, seek to interact with people to understand their challenges and worries. Be the fixer – the person whom all come to. Have a hopeful and positive outlook at life and the new roles.
On her first day, a lady entered the office of the Human Resources Manager and was asked: “how do you find working with new people from diverse towns and countries?” She replied, my experience working with people has been rough. Many complain a lot. They are lazy. They don’t do their part of their bargain. I hope these are not the people here. The peer replied; “indeed these are the kinds of people you will find here. They complain a lot. They are lazy. And they don’t do their part of the bargain.”
Another new staff came to Human Resources Manager, and asked the same question: “how do you find working with new people from diverse towns and countries?” This new staff, a smiling happy young man replied “they are great. Very helpful. Lovely and will promise and over-deliver. The best people in my life. I have achieved a lot working with them. The way I see this place, I am happy to be here. You guys are full of life.”
Smiling, the HR manager replied, those are the kind of people you will find here. Very happy, helpful and disciplined. You will enjoy your life here and transform your career. The young man was welcomed and introduced to all colleagues. He started on a great note thanks to his positive and hopeful outlook on life.
Are you full of positive energy or negative energy? Do you know that any number multiplied by negative one is negative?
