Do not imagine this, because it happens every day.

Your department is running well. You are on top of your job. And you are winning. Everything is going your way. You are getting compliments from your peers. You seem to be making all good decisions and no one is complaining.  Things appear to be going well for you.  You are “in the zone” so to speak.  Your direct supervisor asks you to meet him in the conference room at 3:00 p.m. the following day.  He does not give you more information. That evening, you go back home with a swagger and some spring-like effect in your legs. You are thinking, “finally – I’m getting that promotion and the raise that comes with it”.

You are so excited! And it shows.

At exactly 3:00 p.m., you open the conference room door with much anticipation and wait – what is this.  But you are caught unawares – seated on a long table, you see the company’s Chief Executive Officer, the director of operations, all managers, the finance director, and head legal and of course the lawyers.  Everyone is waiting for you with their notebooks.

As you take a seat, strategically located to intimidate you, so many questions are going in your mind. “What is going on?”  “What is happening?” “Why have I been called here?” “Why are the top executives here? What are the auditors doing here?”

Just as you are about to say something, the CEO welcomes you and says, we are here to know from you what exactly is happening.

“How did this happen?” “Why didn’t you prevent it?” “When did you know about it?” How were your username and password used?

That is one of the scenes I experienced in one of the boardrooms.

You don’t want to be a subject of an investigation.

To be continued.
